<\/a>This study looks at the pos\u00adi\u00adtive envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal effects of car\u00adbon diox\u00adide (CO<\/span>2<\/sub>) emis\u00adsions, a top\u00adic which has been well estab\u00adlished in the sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture but which is far too often ignored in the cur\u00adrent dis\u00adcus\u00adsions about cli\u00admate change policy.<\/p>\n

All life is car\u00adbon based and the pri\u00adma\u00adry source of this car\u00adbon is the CO<\/span>2<\/sub> in the glob\u00adal atmosphere.<\/p>\n

As recent\u00adly as 18,000 years ago, at the height of the most recent major glacia\u00adtion, CO<\/span>2<\/sub> dipped to its low\u00adest lev\u00adel in record\u00aded his\u00adto\u00adry at 180 ppm, low enough to stunt plant growth. This is only 30 ppm above a lev\u00adel that would result in the death of plants due to CO<\/span>2<\/sub> starvation.<\/p>\n

It is cal\u00adcu\u00adlat\u00aded that if the decline in CO<\/span>2<\/sub> lev\u00adels were to con\u00adtin\u00adue at the same rate as it has over the past 140 mil\u00adlion years, life on Earth would begin to die as soon as two mil\u00adlion years from now and would slow\u00adly per\u00adish almost entire\u00adly as car\u00adbon con\u00adtin\u00adued to be lost to the deep ocean sediments.<\/p>\n

The com\u00adbus\u00adtion of fos\u00adsil fuels for ener\u00adgy to pow\u00ader human civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion has reversed the down\u00adward trend in CO<\/span>2<\/sub> and promis\u00ades to bring it back to lev\u00adels that are like\u00adly to fos\u00adter a con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable increase in the growth rate and bio\u00admass of plants, includ\u00ading food crops and trees.<\/p>\n

Human emis\u00adsions of CO<\/span>2<\/sub> have restored a bal\u00adance to the glob\u00adal car\u00adbon cycle, there\u00adby ensur\u00ading the long-term con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion of life on Earth.<\/p>\n

This extreme\u00adly pos\u00adi\u00adtive aspect of human CO<\/span>2<\/sub> emis\u00adsions must be weighed against the unproven hypoth\u00ade\u00adsis that human CO<\/span>2<\/sub>emis\u00adsions will cause a cat\u00ada\u00adstroph\u00adic warm\u00ading of the cli\u00admate in com\u00ading years.<\/p>\n

The one-sided polit\u00adi\u00adcal treat\u00adment of CO<\/span>2<\/sub> as a pol\u00adlu\u00adtant that should be rad\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly reduced must be cor\u00adrect\u00aded in light of the indis\u00adputable sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic evi\u00addence that it is essen\u00adtial to life on Earth.<\/p>\n
